ABI

Ankle Brachial Index (ABI)

The Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) is a simple, non-invasive test used to assess blood flow to the legs and feet by comparing the blood pressure in the lower limbs to the upper limbs. This test helps detect Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), a condition where narrowed or blocked arteries reduce blood flow to the legs, potentially leading to serious complications if left untreated. Early detection of PAD can help prevent its progression and manage related risks.

Your provider will request the exam if appropriate. To prepare for an ABI, please wear loose-fitting pants and a shirt that can easily be rolled up. If possible, choose open-toed shoes or shoes that are easy to slip on. ABIs are performed on Friday afternoons by our nursing staff.
