Pre-Operative Physical Exams
A Pre-Op Physical Exam is usually recommended two weeks prior to a scheduled surgery, to ensure that your health care team has all the essential information needed to provide the best care for you throughout the surgery and during the recovery period.
The exam screens for health problems that could make surgery dangerous and provides essential information about conditions that should be monitored, treated or managed during and after the operation. All of these factors are important to ensure the surgery is as safe as possible.
The exam can include reviewing medical history, medications, a physical exam, and can include the physician requesting bloodwork if needed. A specialist referral might also be necessary for some patients depending on medical history.
The physicians will also indicate which specific medications you will need to stop or hold in preparation for the surgery.
